Meghna trawler capsize toll rises to 5

MUNSHIGANJ: Five bodies were recovered and seven people still missing after a trawler, carrying 60-70 passengers, capsized in the Meghna River of Gazaria Upazila on Wednesday night.

Sub-inspector (SI) of Gazaria Thana Habibullah confirmed the matter to banglanews.

He said the Chandpur-bound trawler coming from Daudkandhi Ghat sank as a sand-laden bulkhead hit the trawler near Gazaria around 9:30pm Wednesday.

Being informed, two units of Fire Service from Gazaria and Comilla rushed to the spot and started rescue operation.

Later, the fire fighters have recovered five bodies of passengers from the spot since early Thursday.

However, most of the passengers were rescued and the rescue mission was underway till filing of the report, the SI added.
