DHAKA: Hearing on the review petition filed challenging the death penalty for war crimes convict Muhammad Kamaruzzaman will begin on Wednesday, according to Wednesday’s cause list of the Appellate Division.
The cause list was published on Tuesday’s evening.

Besides, hearings on appeal petitions against the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) verdicts that sentenced capital punishment to BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Jamaat leader Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid were brought to the list.

However, Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, chief lawyer of Kamaruzzaman and Mujahid, sought more time for the hearings.

A 4-member full bench of Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha will conduct the review hearing. The other members include Justice Abdul Wahab Mia, Justice Hasan Foez Siddique and Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury.

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 sentenced Kamaruzzaman to death on May 9, 2013 for his crimes against humanity in 1971 liberation war.

In response to his petition against the ICT verdict, the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence on November 3 last year while the full text of the judgment was released on February 18.

The tribunal issued a warrant to execute the death sentence of Kamaruzzaman the following day.
