Blogger Avijit hacked dead, wife injured

DHAKA: Blogger and writer Abhijit Roy, 37, was hacked to death and his wife, Rafida Ahamed Banya, 34, injured critically by a group of miscreants at TSC intersection of Dhaka University (DU) Thursday night.

The deceased was the founder of a bangla blog, mukto-mona.com, and also son of a former DU teacher Dr. Ajay Roy.

Deceased’s wife Rafida said that assailants attacked them from behind and chopped indiscriminately while they were returning to a relative’s home on Indira Road from the book fair, leaving them injured critically around 8:45pm.

Photojournalist of an online news portal Jiban Ahmed and Sub-Inspector of Shahbagh Thana Wahiduzzaman rushed the injured couple to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where Avijit succumbed to his injuries around 10:20pm.

DMCH resident surgeon Dr Riaz Morshed confirmed about the death to banglanews.

The couple was living in the U.S. and recently came to visit Bangladesh as two books by Avijit were published in this year’s book fair.

Abhijit published several books including Abiswashasher Darshan (Philosophy of Disbelief), Alo Hatey Choliachhe Adharer Jatri, Mahabiswasher Pran o Buddhimatwar Khonje, Valobasha Kare Koy.

Mentioning the attack resembles the attack on eminent writer Professor Dr. Humayun Azad during Omor Ekushey Book Fair in 2004, DU proctor Amzad Ali said that Avijit might be killed for his write ups on blog.
