DHAKA: The martyrs of 2009 BDR mutiny were paid tributes on behalf of President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Banani army graveyard in the city Wednesday morning.
Wednesday is the 6th anniversary of the horrific bloodshed at the BDR headquarters in Pilkhana, where 74 people, including 57 army officers, were killed in the mutiny in 2009.
President’s military secretary Major General Abul Hossain and premier’s military secretary Major General Mian Muhammad Joynul Abedin, on behalf of them, placed floral wreaths there at 9:00am.
Later, senior home secretary Dr Mozammel Haque Khan, on behalf of state mister for home affairs, Chief of Army Staff, General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan, Chief of Bangladesh Navy Vice Admiral M Farid Habib, Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Muhammad Enamul Bari, and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director General GB Maj Gen Aziz Ahmed paid their homage to the martyrs.
Special doa and munajat also offered there, seeking blessings to the departed soul of the martyrs.
On November 5, 2013, the lower court awarded death penalty to 150 members of the erstwhile Bangladesh Rifles, now Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and two civilians for their role in the massacre of 74 people, including 57 army officers, at BGB Pilkhana headquarters.
The carnage case is now at the High Court. The court began hearing on the appeal and the death references on January 18 this year.
The case proceedings are going on in a speedy mood amid hartal, blockade called by BNP-led alliance and the HC is likely to dissolve the case in next six months, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told banglanews.
