Case against ‘Ziaur Rahman Way’ in Chicago

NEW YORK: A Bangladesh-expatriate US citizen filed a lawsuit against naming a road after late President Ziaur Rahman in Chicago in Illinois State in the USA on Saturday.

He filed the case on behalf of the US unit of Awami League. AL US unit President Dr Siddiqur Rahman confirmed the matter to banglanews.

According to the case statement, Ziaur Rhaman was a military dictator and killed many military officers and he is a ‘known killer’.

For the nameplate on the road, application has been submitted to seek permission to inscribe Zia’s name as ‘General Ziaur Rhaman’ instead of ‘President Ziaur Rahman’.

Siddiqur said no establishment can be named after any politically controversial person according to the laws of Illinois.

The mayor’s office has already cancelled the decision of giving proclamation on the road, he added.
