Tuba workers baton-charged

DHAKA: Law enforcers Tuesday charged batons on the workers of Tuba Group as they tried to besiege the city’s BGMEA building as part of their prescheduled demonstration for getting wages and bonuses.

The agitated workers tried to break police barricade at the main gate of the BGMEA (Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association) building at 11:40am and chanted slogans for meeting their demands.

At one stage, police charged batons and dispersed them.

After a while, the workers gathered in front of BGMEA building and showed their protest movement around 12:00pm.

Besides, earlier on Sunday, mass hunger strike continued in front of Tuba’s garment factories in city’s Badda area.

Both the government and the garment owners’ organization BGMEA talked with the worker leaders and promised to take initiatives in solving the problems.

The garment workers did not pay any heed to the speeches of hope from the government and BGMEA.

About 1,600 workers staged demonstration for their wages and bonuses in five factories of Tuba Group.

However, additional law enforcers were deployed in the area and they are in an alert position to avert any untoward situation.
