DHAKA: The procedures to bring fugitive Rashed Chowdhury back home from USA are in the final stage, claimed Law Minister Advocate Anisul Haq.

He also hoped that Canada as a democratic country will show respect to a friendly democratic country and handover Noor Chowdhury, another condemned accused in Bangabandhu murder case, to Bangladesh.

Although the two could be traced out, officials concerned said, whereabouts of the rest four killers are yet to be ascertained.

The six were among the dirty dozen handed down capital punishment for killing the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with most of his family members on August 15, 1975.

Of the condemned accused, five were hanged to death while killer Aziz Pasha had a natural death while hiding in Zimbabwe.

Apart from Rashed Chowdhury and Noor Chowdhury, those who are on run included Khandakar Abdur Rashid, Sharful Haq Dalim, Abdul Mazid and Moslehuddin.

The Law Minister confirmed that Noor Chowdhury is in Canada now.

Noor is yet to be extradited as Canada is in principle against the death penalty.

“But, we believe a developed nation who claim themselves to be a democratic country will not give shelter to a killer,” said Anisul Haq.

“They follow rule of law, they are proud of their rule of law... We believe if they are committed to the rule of law, obviously they will handover a condemned killer to us,” said the Law Minister.

The minister has also update about Rashed Chowdhury who is now in USA.

“So far, all of his petitions have been rejected in USA. The US government can now take a decision. Yes, we need the help from the US government to get him back,” said the Law Minister.

Anisul Haq, who was chief prosecutor for the state in Bangabandhu murder case in the final appeal, also stressed regular meetings of the government committee working to bring back the fugitive killers of the father of the nation.
