3 awarded 10-yr jail in toxic Paracetamol case

DHAKA: Three officials of Adflame Pharmaceuticals were awarded 10-year rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk 2 lakh each for producing adulterated Paracetamol, that killed 76 children. 

The convicts are-- Adflame manager Mizanur Rahman, its director Dr Helan Pasha and production manager Nagendra Nath Bala.

Drug Court Judge Abdur Rashid passed the order on Tuesday noon.

Two others--owner Azfar Pasha and quality controller Md Noman--- were acquitted from the case as the petitioner could not produce any evidence against them.

The court placed them highest punishment as producing adulterated Paracetamol is a crime against society and humanity.

Earlier, Inspector Abul Khaier Chowdhury of Drug administration department filed the case against Adflame on January 2, 1993 with the Dhaka Drug Court.

The case statement said that around 76 children were killed during 1990s by taking adulterated Paracetamol syrup with industrial toxic chemicals by manufacturer Adflame.
