One killed in ‘gunfight’ with cop

JESSORE: A drug trader was killed in a gunfight with police in Jhumjhumpur Moylakhana area of the district early Friday.

The deceased was identified as Abu Taher, 40, son of late Sona Ullah of Jhumjhumpur, suburb of the district town.

Kotwali thana Officer-In-Charge (OC) Rafiqul Islam said, “Tipped-off that a terrorist gang was holding a secret meeting in the area, police raided there. Sensing police presence, the gang began firing and exploded several bombs, police retailed with gunshots, leaving Taher bullet-injured.”

Police also recovered a one-shooter gun and evidence of exploded bombs.

Taher was taken to Jessore Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries there due to hemorrhage.

Police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy.

Taher was a terrorist and drag dealer in the area and accused in half-a-dozen more cases, the OC said.
