Uncertainty over SAARC summit in Nepal

DHAKA: There is some uncertainty in holding the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit of eight South Asian countries in Katmandu of Nepal in November.

In the 35th meeting of the foreign ministers of the countries on February decided to hold the summit in Nepal.

Nepal had expressed willingness to host the SAARC Summit, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials. The proposal was granted by all member countries but Afghanistan and India, according to the media. 

Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Bhutan issued letters of conformity. But India, who is just completed their general election, and Afghanistan, who is under process of election, didn’t say anything about the summit.

For the instability the certain date was not fixed till now but they expected it could be held between on November 22 to 29, the officials said.

Earlier, the 3rd and 11th SAARC Summit was held respectively in 1987 and 2002 in Nepal.
