Tight security for Pahela Baishakh

DHAKA: Law-enforcement agencies have planned to take four-layer security measures in the capital for the celebration of Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the year of Bengali calendar peacefully.

Dhaka metropolitan Police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and Detective Branch of police have already taken initiatives to ensure highest security of festival goers.

400-year-old Ramna Park or Ramna Botomul as well as Dhaka University campus area will be covered by couples of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV). Besides this, the law enforcers will be in an alert position across the country.

The Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police along with high officials of DMP said that this year, the security measures will be more tightened than previous year.

Joint Commissioner (Crime) of DMP Shahbuddin Khan said that there will be around 50-CCTV to monitor and ensure the security in capital’s Ramna Park and Suhrawardy Udyan area.

Police and DB personnel will sweep any threat with metal detectors and dog squad in the area for security reason from Sunday. After that they will take position at the entrances of the park and other important points of the capital.

Moreover, Dhanmondi’s Rabindra-Sarobar area will be covered with the same security measures.

Students of Institute of Fine Arts of Dhaka University along with different organizations, including socio-cultural, institutions and business, have chalked out various programs to celebrate Pahela Baishakh. The law enforcers will keep a close eye on these sorts of programs to avert any unwanted situation.

Legal and Media Wing Director of (RAB) ATM Habibur Rahman said that some three thousands members of the elite force will be on road to assure the security of the mass people.

RAB`s helicopter will also remain standby for monitoring and emergency rescue operation if necessary, he added.

Dhaka Metropolitan Traffic Police sources said that the movements of the vehicles will be restricted around Ramna area for security reason.

Special security measures will also be taken at prominent shopping malls, markets, business establishments for traditional `Halkhata` on Pahela Baishakh.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hasan Mahmud Khandker has chalked out several security plans and asked the law enforcers to be alert to face any threat or violence.

Assistant Inspector General AIG (Media) of Police headquarter Jalal Uddin Ahmed confirmed the matter to banglanews.
