EC Mobarak receives death threat

DHAKA: Acting chief election commissioner Abdul Mobarak received death threat over mobile phone on Sunday afternoon.

He got the threat at 12:10 noon.

Mobarak’s personal secretary (PS) Alamgir Hossain filed a general diary (GD) with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in this connection.

Sources said the acting CEC received the death threat while he was holding a meeting with the other election commissioners at his office at the EC Secretariat in city at noon.

"I am the messenger of your death. Your wife will become widow and children will become orphan soon," the commissioner’s PS Alamgir told banglanews about the call.

The call was made from an unidentified number, he added.

Mobarak has been performing the duty of head of the Election Commission since CEC Rakibuddin went on a visit to USA on March 3.

About the death threat and the GD filing, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar thana Officer-In-Charge Abdul Momin said “we have contacted to the higher authorities and necessary steps would be taken in this regard”.
