Govt rejects reports claiming rise in crime

The Chief Adviser’s Press Wing has dismissed media reports alleging a sharp increase in crime rate across Bangladesh this year.

Press Wing also said there is no official data against such claim and may create unnecessary fear among the public.

A statement was issued in this regard on Monday (July 14).

The Press Wing said a review of government crime statistics from September 2024 to June 2025 shows no evidence that major crimes have surged. Instead, data compiled by the Police Headquarters indicate that the trend of serious offences has remained largely stable over the past ten months.

According to the statement, there are no signs of any rapid escalation in major crimes. In reality, the incidence of most serious offences has either declined or stayed at a consistent level, though a slight increase has been observed in certain categories.

The Press Wing called on citizens to remain vigilant but urged them to have confidence in law enforcement agencies, adding that the overall crime rate remains broadly steady and under control.
