Adviser dismisses freedom fighter status revocation reports as baseless

Adviser to the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs Faruq-e-Azam has said reports claiming that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the four national leaders have lost their official recognition as freedom fighters are not correct.

He made the clarification while speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Wednesday (June 4).

Several media outlets reported that under the newly issued “National Freedom Fighters Council (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025,” the freedom fighter status of Bangabandhu, Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmad, M Mansur Ali, AHM Qamaruzzaman and more than 400 politicians elected in the 1970 election had been cancelled and they were now categorized as “Associates of the Liberation War.”

In response, the adviser said, “The Mujibnagar Government has been recognized as part of the Liberation War in the ordinance. What has been reported about the cancellation of the freedom fighter status of Bangabandhu and others from the Mujibnagar Government is not accurate.”

The ordinance issued Tuesday night revised definitions of freedom fighters but did not strip the Mujibnagar leaders of their recognition, according to the adviser.
