Wazed Miah’s 5th death anniversary Friday

DHAKA: The 5th death anniversary of noted nuclear scientist Dr MA Wazed Miah, also husband of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is being observed on Friday.

Dr MA Wazed Miah Memorial Foundation will hold a discussion at Public Library in the city to mark the anniversary.

Prayer will be offered at his grave at Fatehpur village of Pirganj upazila of Rangpur on the morning. Daylong Qurankhwani, doa and milad mahfil will be held there.

Dr Wazed died on this day in 2009.

Ministry for Science and Technology and National Coordinated Development Foundation has separately arranged programmes on Thursday as Friday is the holiday.

On Thursday, the foundation held a discussion and a doa mahfil at Shilpakala Academy of the city in the afternoon and the ministry took same agenda at the Atomic Energy Commission on the afternoon.

Wazed Miah, known as Sudha Miah, was born at Fatehpur village in Pirganj, Rangpur, on February 16 in 1942.

During his student life, he was obtained the third place in First Division in his graduation in Physics discipline at Dhaka University in 1961 and became first in his post-graduation there in 1962.

Wazed earned his PhD degree from Durham University, UK in 1967 and joined the then Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission in 1965. He also served as the chairman of the Commission.

He was involved with the politics of Chhatra League and was elected VP of Fazlul Haque Hall Student Union in 1961.

Wazed married the incumbent premier on Sheikh Hasina in 1967 and has a number of books on physics and politics to his credit.
