Adverse weather caused by a low-pressure has disrupted electricity and telecommunication services in various parts of Bangladesh, leaving thousands of mobile towers offline and affecting millions of users.
The situation was confirmed on Friday (May 30) by Fayez Ahmed Tayyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser on Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology.
In this regard Tayyeb has made a post in his Facebook.
He said over 8,200 telecom towers across the country had been impacted, with more than 5,000 temporarily shut down following strong winds, thunderstorms, and tidal surges.
“Field workers from both the telecom sector and rural electricity teams are working round the clock to restore power and network coverage,” he said.
While about 64 percent of the affected towers have been reconnected, roughly 5,960 sites—around 35 percent of the total—are still out of service as of Friday evening. The worst-affected regions include Barishal, Sylhet, Tangail, Chandpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka North, Cumilla, Noakhali, and parts of northern Chattogram.
To ease the disruption, portable generators have been deployed to power 624 towers, and installation is underway at another 504 sites.
Although the low-pressure system over the Bay has weakened, it continues to bring scattered thunderstorms and rainfall across many regions, compounding recovery efforts.
Telecom operators have urged users to remain patient, promising gradual restoration as the weather improves and electricity supply stabilizes.
