Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus reached Tokyo today (May 28) on a four-day official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and promoting cooperation in trade, investment, and development.
Prof Yunus is scheduled to attend the 30th Nikkei Forum: Future of Asia, where he will deliver a keynote speech on "Asia’s Challenge in a Turbulent World."
He is also expected to hold a high-level meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on May 30.
A Cathay Pacific flight carrying the Chief Adviser and his delegation landed at Narita International Airport at 2:05 pm local time, where he was received with state honours by senior Japanese officials and Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Japan.
During the visit, seven Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed, covering cooperation in investment, energy, and technology.
An Exchange of Notes is also anticipated on Japanese budgetary support and the upgradation of the Joydebpur–Ishwardi railway line.
Prof Yunus will meet key Japanese stakeholders, including JICA President Dr Tanaka Akihiko and JETRO President Kimura Fukunari, and attend a Bangladesh Business Seminar with top executives, investors, and young professionals.
The Chief Adviser will also give exclusive interviews to major Japanese media outlets including NHK, Nikkei, Asahi Shimbun, and Yomiuri Shimbun.
Soka University will award Prof Yunus an Honorary Doctorate in recognition of his contribution to social innovation and global development. He will also address faculty and students.
The visit will conclude with a community reception hosted by the Bangladesh Embassy in Tokyo.
Prof Yunus is scheduled to return to Dhaka on May 31.
