A Dhaka court today sent Md Jahangir Alam, former Secretary of the Public Security Division at the Ministry of Home Affairs, to jail in connection with the killing of Sheikh Mehedi Hasan Zunayed during the July-August 2024 mass uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Joshita Islam passed the order after police produced Jahangir before the court, following the completion of his two-day remand.

Earlier, on May 14, another magistrate had granted the remand, though police executed it on May 20. Jahangir was arrested from Dhaka’s Gulshan area on October 1, 2024.

According to the case, Zunayed was shot in the head during a protest at Dhaka Medical Burn Institute on August 5, 2024, allegedly by police and Awami League cadres. 

He later died at the hospital. A case was filed on September 5 with Bongshal Police Station, naming Jahangir and others.
