China not involved in Rakhine ‘Humanitarian Corridor’: Envoy Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen has said that China is not involved in the proposed humanitarian corridor in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, as China respects the sovereignty of all countries.

He made the remark on Thursday (May 8) while responding to a journalist’s question at a seminar organised by the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) in Dhaka.

The seminar was titled “Fifty Years of Bangladesh-China Relations: Journey Towards New Heights.”

“This issue is between Myanmar and Bangladesh. China is not part of the corridor process,” the envoy said.

In response to another question about whether Jamaat-e-Islami proposed a plan to make Rakhine an independent state during a meeting with him, Yao Wen said, “I had no such discussion with Jamaat. I don’t know why they said that. Please ask them directly.”

On the Teesta River project, the ambassador said China is ready to support it, but Bangladesh needs to make a prompt decision.

The seminar's keynote speaker was Dr Imtiaz Ahmed, a former professor of international relations at Dhaka University.

BIISS Chairman Ambassador AFM Gausul Azam Sarkar presided over the event, while BIISS Director General Major General Iftekhar Anis delivered the welcome address.
