Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul said that the ‘Cyber Security Ordinance 2025’ will be announced this week following approval by the council of advisers.
Speaking at a press briefing today after the council meeting chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, Dr Nazrul said the ordinance will take effect immediately upon gazette notification, pending vetting by the law ministry.
Key features include recognition of internet access as a civic right, a ban on online gambling, and new punishable offences such as cyber harassment of women and children, spreading religious hatred, and AI-based crimes.
Nine controversial sections from the 2023 Act have been scrapped, leading to automatic cancellation of related cases.
The council also approved amendments to the Civil Procedure Code and an ordinance on electoral area demarcation.
