Abantika suicide: Cumilla court denies Amman bail

A Cumilla court on Sunday (March 24) rejected the bail plea of Amman Siddqui, prime suspect in Jagannath University student Fairuz Sadaf Abantika suicide case.

Cumilla senior judicial magistrate court Judge Md. Abu Bakkar Siddiqui denied bail to Amman after his lawyer submitted application.

On March 15, around 10pm Fairuz Abantika, a student of the 2017-18 academic year of Law Department of Jagannath University (JnU), was found hanging at her residence in Cumilla city's Bagichagao area.

Later, on March 16, following the death of Abantika, the varsity administration suspended alleged assistant proctor Deen Islam and her classmate Amman Siddique.

After that, Abantika’s mother filed a case against Deen Islam and classmate Amman Siddique with Cumilla’s Kotowali police station for instigating Abantika to suicide.

Meanwhile, a five-member probe committee has been formed over her suicidal death.

The committee has been constituted with Professor Masum Billah, dean of the faculty of Law, has been made as the convener and Himadri Shekhar, deputy registrar, as member secretary.

Other members of the probe body are Social Science Department dean Prof Abul Hossain, teachers' association president Prof Jakir Hossaon and chairman of Music Department Prof Jhumur Ahmed.

On March 17, members of Dhaka metropolitan police (DMP) detained Jagannath University (JnU) assistant proctor Deen Islam and student Amman Siddiqui and handed over to Cumilla police.
