24% buses lack fitness, 69% of workers lack fixed wages: TIB

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) in Dhaka on Tuesday (March 5) revealed that 24% of buses are plying the roads without fitness certificates, and 69.3% of the transport workers do not have fixed wages.

TIB’s researchers Nuruzzaman Farhad, Farhana Rahman, and Mohammad Noore Alam presented the study findings at TIB’s office in Dhanmondi.

The study conducted on privately owned bus transport across the nation also revealed that 18.9% of these buses are unregistered, 18.5% lack tax tokens, and 22% operate without route permits.

The report said the transport workers have to work about 11 hours a day, with 82% of them having no appointment letters.

TIB said 75.8% of passengers, 48% of transport workers, and 51.8% of owners, who participated in the study, blamed excessive speeding as one of the prime causes of road accidents.

According to the report, 22.2% of bus staff and workers said drivers operate the vehicles and conductors, assistants of drivers, and supervisors also work under the influence of alcohol or drugs – while the rate is 45.9% and 19.2% in city and inter-district services respectively.
