Fertilizer-laden vessel sinks at Mongla port, 8 rescued

A fertilizer-laden lighter vessel capsized at the Mongla port in Khulna on Tuesday (Jan 25) morning.

However, eight crew members of the ship including the master were able to swim to the next ship.

According to information, the vessel named Shahjalal Express-2 carrying 500 metric tons of fertilizer (MOP) capsized around 11.30pm.

Mongla Port Authority Harbor Master Captain Shaheen Majid confirmed the matter.

He said Shahjalal Express-2 was going to Jessore's Nawapara with fertilizer from the Liberian flag carrier MV Vita Olympic, which was stationed at Herbaria-9 in Mongla port. On the way, a foreign vessel named Supreme Valor, stationed with a clinker at Herbaria-8, collided with it while turning, causing water to enter the lighter's engine room, he said

The port's navigation channel is normal, he said, adding a team from Bangladesh Coast Guard West Zone started the rescue operation at night after receiving the information.
