Marvel’s latest superhero blockbuster, "Thunderbolts"*, continues its reign at the North American box office, holding the number one spot for a second consecutive weekend.
The film, featuring Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, brought in an additional $33 million over the three-day period, according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations.
Despite a 55% decline from its opening weekend, the movie has maintained a stronger hold than recent Marvel releases, Variety reported.
Marvel sought to generate further excitement by revealing that the asterisk in the film’s title signifies the ragtag team of antiheroes evolving into "The New Avengers."
The characters are set to return in next year’s highly anticipated "Avengers: Doomsday," which Marvel and parent company Disney hope will match the success of previous franchise installments.
Warner Bros.' period vampire thriller "Sinners" held steady in second place, adding $21.1 million to its domestic total of $180 million. The film, directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, continues to benefit from glowing reviews.
"A Minecraft Movie" retained its third-place position, earning another $8 million, pushing its domestic total past $400 million. The live-action adaptation, starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, has already grossed over $900 million globally, reinforcing the success of video game-based films.
Amazon MGM Studios’ "The Accountant 2" secured fourth place with $6.1 million, featuring Ben Affleck as a neurodivergent math expert entangled in criminal dealings, alongside Jon Bernthal as his hitman brother.
New horror release "Clown in a Cornfield" debuted in fifth place, collecting $3.7 million.
“This is a solid opening for an indie horror film, particularly for a micro-budget production,” said David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research.
