School admission through lottery: Education minister Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni

The Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni said admission (class I-IX) into government and private schools for the upcoming academic year would to take place through lottery due to the coronavirus pandemic.

She made the disclosure at a virtual news conference on school admission on Wednesday.

Last year, students of Class I were admitted through lottery while students of Classes VI and IX were enrolled on the basis of their Primary School Certificate (PSC) and Junior School Certificate (JSC) exam results respectively. Written tests were held for other classes.

On Monday, the government directed all primary schools of the country to promote their respective students to upper class through individual assessments conducted by teachers.

Earlier on March 16, the Ministry of Education issued a press release regarding the government decision of closing all educational institutions and coaching centres from March 18 to 31 in wake of Covid-19 outbreak.
 
Later the closure was extended till December 19 in several phases. No classes have been held since that day.

Moreover, final examinations for primary and secondary level students were cancelled, as well as the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and its equivalent examinations.
