The government is about to cancel the Primary School Certificate (PSC) and Junior School Certificate (JSC) examinations for this year in a bid to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Secretary to the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education Md Akram-Al-Hossain on Tuesday said the decision to cancel the exams has not been finalized yet.

A short summery is being sent to the prime minister for approval. Upon approval, PSC and JSC examinations will be cancelled just for this year, he said.

Sources at the ministry said, the preliminary discussion on the cancelation was held last week between Secretary Akram-Al-Hossain and prime minister’s principle secretary.

Around 50 lakh students participate in PSC and JSC examinations in the country every year. Even if the exams are cancelled, a final examination will be held at schools after they reopen, said officials.

Following the detection of first coronavirus patient in the country on March 8, all education institutions were declared shut from March 17. The closure was extended till August 31 in several phases.
