The government has agreed to three major demands of Jagannath University students following a long demonstration and hunger strike in the capital.
The announcement was made by Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Md Imdadul Karim on Friday (May 16) at around 7:30pm, when he visited protesting students at Kakrail.
He said the government has decided to increase the university’s operational budget, addressing the students’ first demand. To tackle the housing crisis, temporary construction work will begin soon. Additionally, work on the university’s second campus has already started.
Following the announcement, the hunger-striking students were given water to break their fast. University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Dr SM Faiz Ahmed and other officials were present at the scene.
Earlier, a group of students began a hunger strike at 4:00pm near the Kakrail mosque crossing, heading toward the residence of the Chief Adviser in Jamuna. Before that, they had staged a sit-in at the same location for more than 50 hours.
