Teacher sued as student shot in Sirajganj SMMAMC classroom

A case was filed against the teacher who reportedly shot at a student during a class at Shaheed M. Monsur Ali Medical College in Sirajganj on Monday (March 4).

The victim, Arafat Amin Tomal, was promptly admitted to the hospital, while the authorities of the MMAMC handed over teacher, Raihan Sadiq, to the police.

Besides, the Health Ministry formed a three-member committee to investigate the incident.

Tomal's father, Abdullah Al Amin, from Dhanut Upazila of Bogura, filed the case at Sadar Police Station on Monday night (March 4).

Sadar police station OC (Officer in Charge) MD Sirajul Islam confirmed the matter.

According to the case details, being informed that Arafat Amin Tomal, a third-year student at the medical college, was hospitalized, Tomal's father rushed to Sirajganj and found his son in critical condition at the surgical department of the medical college hospital.

The OC, referring to the classmates, said that Raihan Sharif, a lecturer of the Community Medicine Department, used to bring a pistol to the classroom every day.

He engaged in an altercation with his student Arafat while conducting his class around 5 pm, and suddenly he shot at Arafat, he added.

The teacher Dr Raihan Sadiq was detained by police after the incident, the OC said.

Quoting the students, he said, a class of third-year students of the medical college was going on around 3:30 pm on Monday.

In this class, the teacher reportedly threatened students with failing them in examinations. Following that, a dispute started between the students and the teacher.

At one stage, the third-year student was shot in the leg.

Students staged protests immediately after the incident. Additional police forces have been deployed in and around the medical college and the adjoining area to keep the situation under control.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry formed a 3-member probe committee over the incident appointing Additional Director General (Administration) Professor Dr. Bayzid Khorshid Riaz as convenor.

The other members are Professor Md. Mahiuddin Matubber, Director (Medical Education) of the Directorate General of Health Services, and Mohammad Mohsin Uddin, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Health Education and Family Welfare.
