TCB starts selling onions at Tk 40 per Kg

The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has started selling Indian onions at Tk 40 per kg today (April 2).

State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu inaugurated the onion-selling program at TCB building in the city's Karwan Bazar area this morning.

In its first consignment, some 1,650 tonnes of onion has already arrived in the country from India. The TCB will sell such onion in Dhaka, Chattogram and Gazipur at Tk40 per kg.

Earlier, Commerce Ministry Senior Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh said that the first consignment out of 50,000 tonnes of onion has already arrived in the country from India while the sale of this onion would start from today.

“Although India has currently halted its export of onion, but it has agreed to export 50,000 metric tons of onion to Bangladesh upon our request. The first consignment of 1,650 metric tons of onion has already arrived in Bangladesh. Since onion is a perishable item, the timeframe for importing its next consignment will be determined after looking into its quality,” he added.

Earlier on Sunday, the State Minister informed that the imported onion from India would be sold at Dhaka and Chattogram at Taka 40 per kg.

He also hoped that under such an initiative, the price of onion would come down to Taka 40 per kg in at least 30 districts out of 64 districts.

The imported onion from India would be sold at some 103 spots in Dhaka, 55 spots in Chattogram, 17-20 spots in Gazipur simultaneously at Tk40 per kg. Each truck will contain 10 tonnes of onion.
