Ministry asks UGC about its ‘corrupted’ officer

DHAKA: Education Ministry asked University Grants Commission (UGC) about what measures it has taken against corrupt official Ferdous Zaman.

Sources in the ministry office confirmed this on Sunday noon.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid issued a letter to the UGC authorities on Thursday last as Britania University of Comilla alleged that Additional Director Ferdous Zaman of UGC took Tk 5 lakh as bribe.

On June 30, Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) published a report about the corruption and irregularities in private universities.

According to the report, the education ministry and UGC asked to the universities for further information.

Consequence of that, Britania University informed the ministry about Zaman’s misdeed.

On July 13, banglanews published a report about the controversial activities and corruption of the UGC official.

Replying to the query about the taken steps UGC chairman Dr AK Azad Chowdhury said to banglanews that “we set up a three- member probe committee led by Begum Rokeya University (BRU) Vice-Chancellor Dr AKM Nurun Nabi”.

“We will take action against the corrupted members after the submission of the report,” he said.
