SC verdict over Khaleda’s bail Wednesday

DHAKA: The Supreme Court fixed Wednesday (May 16) to deliver its verdict on the petitions filed against the High Court order that granted bail to BNP chief Khaleda Zia in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hussain deferred the date Tuesday (May 15) after hearing some arguments from both the prosecution and defence attorney.

The Appellate Division bench was set to announce the verdict today but delayed to hear the arguments from Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Khaleda Zia’s lawyer Advocate Jainul Abedin.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee member Dr. Abdul Moin Khan, Vice Chairman Abdul Noman and other senior leaders were also present in court.

Earlier on Wednesday (May 9), a four-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain set the date, as the hearing came to an end.

The High Court on March 12 granted 4-month bail for Khaleda in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. Earlier, she landed in jail on February 8, after being sentenced to five years' rigorous imprisonment in the same case.

Afterwards, the apex court stayed the HC bail order following the petitions filed by the ACC and the government.
