‘Tarique to be brought back to country through Interpol’

MADARIPUR: Shipping minister Shahjahan Khan said BNP vice chairman Tarique Rahman, who has been sentenced 10 years jail in Zia orphanage Trust graft case and currently staying in London, will be brought back to Bangladesh with the help of Interpol.

He made the remarks to reporters after inaugurating a new building at Charmugria Merchants High School in Madaripur on Friday morning (February 16).

Earlier on February 8, a special court in Dhaka sentenced five years jail to BNP Chief Khaleda Zia and 10 years jail to 5 others including Khaleda’s son and party senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman in a graft case. However, BNP lawyers are now claiming that the certified copy of the verdict is not being issued intentionally to delay the appeal process.

In response to a query about the delay of Khaleda’s verdict copy, the minister said, “It is matter of court and even the government has no power to delay it if court issues the certified copy. BNP is just trying to shift the blame on government.”

Shajahan also said that the court and election commission will decide whether BNP chief Khaleda and his son Tarique can participate in the election or not. The AL government has nothing to do here but we want inclusive polls.

The new building of Charmugria Merchants High School has been constructed at a cost of Tk 50 lakh with the financing of Indian High Commission.
