Govt unwilling in talks for apprehension of debacle: Fakhrul

DHAKA: BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has commented that the government is not keen to sit in talks, as it apprehends of debacle if the next election is held under free and fair atmosphere.

He made the comment while inaugurating a day-long free medical camp at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office in the city on Saturday (January 20).

Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), the platform of pro-BNP doctors, arranged the medical camp on the occasion of 82nd birth anniversary of BNP’s founder and late President Ziaur Rahman.

DAB secretary general and BNP leader Dr AZM Zahid Hossain presided over the function.

Mirza Fakhrul said that if the next general election is held under a non-party government, the ruling Awami League won’t win in it. So, the government is not keen to hold talks with the political parties, he said.

He criticized Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader for his reaction over the talks proposal. “No election under Sheikh Hasina will be free and fair”, said the BNP leader.

Earlier on January 13, Mirza Fakhrul in BNP’s reaction over Prime Minister’s address to the nation urged the PM to hold talks with all the political parties to resolve the crisis and discuss the next general elections.

In reply, Obaidul Quader on that day ruled out the possibility of holding talks with the BNP or any other political party over the next general elections.
