BARISAL: Police recovered a firearm from the residence of a BNP leader in Barisal who was earlier arrested in a case filed over shooting Bakerganj upazila unit Awami League leader Syed Sultan Hossain.

The arrestee, Salam Shikder, is a resident of Bakerganj upazila and a local leader of BNP.

Police recovered a pistol, a magazine and one round of bullet from his residence.

District Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Saiful Islam told reporters at a press briefing Wednesday (January 17) that an armed group led by Salam carried out an attack at Niyamoti Bazar in Bakerganj, after the evening of December 11, following previous enmity. Bakerganj upazila unit Awami League Vice President Syed Sultan Hossain sustained bullet injuries in the attack.

The injured AL leader’s wife Nasrin Akter, as a plaintiff, filed a case accusing 11 people including Salam, over the incident. Police nabbed Salam from Dhaka on January 9.

He was granted 3-day remand by the court. Following information from him during the interrogation on Tuesday (January 16), a pistol, one round of bullet and a magazine were recovered from his bedroom.

However, Salam also confessed to open gunshots on Sultan, with an attempt to kill him, said the SP.
