Ex-deputy speaker Akhtar Hamid no more

DHAKA: Former Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Md Akhtar Hamid Siddiqui died at a private hospital in the city on Sunday (November 19). He was 71.

Akhtar Hamid Siddiqui, also an adviser of BNP chairperson, breathed his last at the United Hospital in city’s Gulshan area at noon. He had been suffering from lung cancer.

He left behind his wife, two sons and one daughter, and host relatives to mourn his death.

The first namaz-e-janaza of the former deputy speaker was held after Asr prayers in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.

The second namaz-e-janaza will be held at the Jatiya Sangsad premises on Monday (November 20). Later, will be then taken in his native Naogaon and will be buried there after another namaz-e-janaza.

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed deep shock at the death of the BNP leader. They conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.

A three-time MP from the Naogaon-3 constituency, Akhtar Hamid Siddiqui was born in 1947 in Noagaon.

He served as the deputy speaker of the eighth parliament from 2001 t0 2006.
