DHAKA: A Dhaka court on Tuesday (May 23) deferred the date for taking self-defense statement from BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, the prime accused in a case filed for corruption in Zia Orphanage Trust.

The court of Dhaka Special Judge-5 Dr Akhtaruzzaman set the date June 1.

Khaleda Zia didn’t appear to the court on Tuesday which was earlier set date for her self-defense in the case.

Her lawyers plead time presenting awaiting appeal hearing from the Supreme Court for re-investigating the case and Khaleda’s illness as reasons.

The anti-corruption commission (ACC) filed the case on July 3 in 2008 with Ramna police station accusing Khaleda Zia, her son Tarique Rahman and four others for embezzlement of about Tk 21 million that was received as grants for orphans via a foreign bank.
