DHAKA: Bangladesh welcomed Tuesday’s historic summit of US President Donald Trump and North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un that opened the door to ending seven decades of hostility between the two countries.

On Thursday (June 14), Bangladesh Foreign Ministry issued a statement to the media regarding this.

Bangladesh believe that US and North Korea will keep the promise made at the meeting, in a bid to restoring peace, stability and security in the Korean Peninsula.

Like the international communities, Bangladesh will stand by for implementation of the initiatives taken by the US President and the North Korean leader, said the release.

President Trump, after a daylong historic summit with Kim Jong-un in Sentosa Island of Singapore on Tuesday (June 12), announced plans to suspend military exercises on the Korean Peninsula and said he expected Kim to move “very quickly” to dismantle his country’s nuclear arsenal.

In the joint statement, Trump “committed to provide security guarantees” to North Korea. Kim “reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”
