MPs can run campaign in city polls: EC

DHAKA: The Election Commission (EC) has amended the code of conduct with a provision that will allow member of the parliaments (MPs) to run campaign in City Corporation polls.

Election Commission secretary Helaluddin Ahmed made the development while talking to reporters in city’s Agargaon EC office on Thursday afternoon (May 24). The approval came from a meeting held in EC building earlier in the day.

According to EC sources, the revised election code of conduct will come into effect after Law Ministry issues gazette in this regard. However, the amendment is less likely to be effective before the upcoming Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) polls.

EC secretary Helaluddin Ahmed said a total of 11 amendments regarding the election campaign have been approved in the meeting.

“According to EC investigation, MP post is not a profitable one. That is why they have excluded from the list of VIPs who are beneficiaries of the state. Any MP can run campaign in any City Corporation Polls”, he added.
