‘Safe Zone’ in Myanmar inevitable for Rohingya repatriation A two-day conference on Rohingya refugee crisis begins at Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of DU

DHAKA: Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque on Monday (April 2) said that the Rohingya refugees have to be taken back to Myanmar after creating safe zone or ensuring security.

The foreign secretary was addressing an international conference as chief guest on the first day of a two-day international conference on ‘Rohingya Refugee Crisis: Towards Sustainable Solutions’.

The conference was held at Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of Dhaka University. 

Centre for Genocide studies of DU, Brac University and Action Aid jointly organized the conference.

“Rohingya crisis is not only the issue of Bangladesh and Myanmar. This issue affects the world community. Bangladesh will be at risk, if a sustainable solution is not found. Therefore, this problem has to be addressed in a specific time. Rohinga repatriation has to be started after creating safe zones in Myanmar,” said Md Shahidul Haque.

On the second day of the conference, ‘Dhaka Declaration’ will be given.

Sudipta Mukherjee, Bangladesh's director of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) was the special guest. Canada's Special Envoy for Myanmar Robert Keith, among others, spoke on the issue.
