No militancy link with Akayed found here: CTTC

DHAKA: Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Chief Monirul Islam said no evidence of militancy connection with Akayed Ullah, suspect of New York subway bomb attack, has been found in Bangladesh.

He made the disclosure to reporters in DMP media center in Dhaka on Wednesday (Dec 13) after questioning Akayed’s wife and relatives for information.

He said, “Akayed was a ‘homegrown’ militant in New York. We suspect he got involved with militancy through internet there but no proof of his militancy involvement was found here. However, we are investigating his contacts in here.”

Monirul said police are investigating the matter with utmost priority because there are many Bangladeshi expatriates living in US. They are doing trades and jobs there and we are investigating the incident to avert any negative influence on them.

“We have directly contacted with US law enforcement officials in this regard and we are ready to provide them with full cooperation if they ask”, Monirul added.

Earlier on Tuesday (Dec 12), Police started questioning the wife, mother and father-in-laws of Akayed Ullah, the suspect of New York subway bomb blast.

The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) detained them for questioning on Tuesday afternoon (Dec 12).

They are identified as Akayed Ullah’s Jannatul Ferdous Jui, her mother Mahfuza Akhter and father Julfiqar Haidar. Jannatul Ferdous Jui has been living with her six-month old son in a house in Dhaka’s Hazaribag area.

On Monday (Dec 11), At least four people were injured in a bomb blast in a corridor connecting the Times Square and Port Authority stations in New York city’s west side at 7:30am. Later police detained Akayed Ullah over the incident. He was also injured in the blast.
