DHAKA: The gross domestic product (GDP) growth of Bangladesh reached 7.28 percent this fiscal year, beating all the previous records in the history of the country’s economy.
Meanwhile, per capita income rises to $1,610 which equivalent to Tk 1,28,800 considering per dollar equal to Tk 80.
Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) made the disclosure in a final report of 2016-17 fiscal year presented at ECNEC meeting on Tuesday (Nov 14).
According to the report, the amount of gross domestic product (GDP) rises to 250 billion dollar. After the independence, it took 34 years for GDP to reach 100 billion dollar. Comparing to that, this new achievement is a record.
The ECNEC meeting was held at the NEC conference room in city’s Sher-e-Bangla area with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the chair.
After the meeting, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal told reporters that per capita income has risen 8 dollars in the last fiscal (2016-17) which was 1,602 US dollar. It was 1,316 US dollar in the 2014-15 fiscal year.
On the other hand, the GDP target of 2016-17 fiscal was 7.10 percent but 0.18 percent more than the target was achieved.
Basically, per capita income was increased due to the boost in the GDP growth. Among other important sectors, 2.97 percent GDP were achieved in agriculture sector, 10.22 percent in industrial sector and 6.69 percent in service sector, said the planning minister.
”It is a new record in our history. GDP growth will cross 8 percent in 2019. We hope that it will be in 9 to 10 percent within 2030 and we can achieve out target within 2041.”
