DHAKA: The High Court is reading out the verdict on death references and appeals in the much-talked-about sensational Narayanganj seven-murder cases. 

An HC bench of Justice Bhabani Prasad Singh and Justice Mostofa Zaman started reading out the verdicts after 10:30am Tuesday (August 22).

Enhanced security measures were taken marking the verdicts in the sensational murder cases.

Besides, entry of the journalists was restricted. 

Earlier, on July 26, the same bench fixed August 13 for delivering the verdict as hearing came to an end.

But, on August 13, the court deferred the date to August 22.

On January16, Narayanganj District Session Judge Court handed over death sentences to 26 accused including prime accused Nur Hossain and three suspended Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) officials in the case.

Of the total 35 accused, nine were awarded jail terms in separate time-limits in the case. 

Of the 26 death-row convicts, 20 have filed regular and jail appeal.

Prime accused Former Councillor of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Nur Hossain, Former commander of RAB-11 Lieutenant Col (retd) Tarique Sayeed Muhammad, Major (retd) Arif Hossain, Lieutenant commander (retd) Masud Rana, Sub-Inspector (SI) Purnendu Bala are among the 26 convicts who are detained in jail at present.

Earlier, on completion of all legal procedures, hearing upon the appeal and death references began on May 22.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, Deputy Attorney Generals MA Mannan Mohon, Jahid Sarwar Kajol and Assistant Attorney General Bashir Ahmed moved for the state while Lawyer Monsurul Haque Chowdhury were among others moved for the accused in the hearing of 33-working day.

Besides, eight of the total 35 accused are absconding.

On April 27 in 2014, seven men, including Narayanganj City Corporation councillor Nazrul Islam and senior lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarkar, were abducted. Their bodies were found floating in river Shitalakhya some days later.

Relatives of Nazrul Islam and Chandan Sarkar filed two separate cases over the incident.
