GAIBANDHA: Over one lakh people of 25 villages were stranded in flood water as new areas were being affected due to continuous rise of water level of four rivers in Gaibandha.
On Sunday afternoon (July 09), the river Brahmaputra was flowing 14 cm above the danger mark. In addition, Teesta, Karatoya and Ghaggar-Hakra rivers were facing the danger marks.
People, living in Brahmaputra flood control embankment area, became worried as water level of four rivers of the district was rising gradually through one week long.
Besides, 15 points of the dam were in risky condition. Residents of the dam are anxious of breaking the parts of the dam when the water pressure increases.
Meanwhile, most of the people of Brahmaputra banks in Fulchhari and Saghata upazilas were waterlogged. Roads, cultivable lands of those areas were submerged.
Several other areas including Hasdhara, Karaibari, Rayadasbari, Kirtanpara, Syedpur areas of Kamarjani under Sadar upazila were flooded.
Besides, people of Tarapur, Belka, Haripur, Chandipur, Sreepur and Kapasia unions under Sundarganj upazila were suffering because of flood.
Flood Control Dam of Water Development Board was under threat.
Union parishad (UP) Chairman Jalal Uddin of Kapasia union told Banglanews that eight wards of his union were flooded. Three thousand families were waterlogged.
Executive Engineer Mahbubur Rahman of Gaibandha Water Development Board told Banglanews that the water of four rivers was rising continually.
Gaibandha District Commissioner Gautam Chandra Pal told Banglanews that the flood affected areas were visited.
Besides, government relief assistance will be provided to the victims immediately.
