5 to die, 17 get life in Gopalganj murder case

GOPALGANJ: A district court on Thursday (May 25) has sentenced death penalty to five people, life term imprisonment to 17 people and 10 years imprisonment to three others for killing a businessman, Sirajul Huq Siru, in Gopalganj.

Gopalganj additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Nazir Ahmed also fined Tk 30,000 to death row and life term convicts while Tk 10,000 to three other convicts.

The court also acquitted 12 others as the prosecution was failed to produce enough evidence against them. 

According to case statement, on October 16 in 1999, miscreants hacked dead businessman Sirajul Huq and dumped the body in a canal at Aruakandi village in Kashiani upazila of the district.

Later, deceased’s wife Amena Begum filed a murder case with the Kashiani police station accusing 37 people. After 17 years of holding long hearing, the court passed the verdict on Thursday.
