DHAKA: The Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit on Thursday night (April 27) has arrested a person for allegedly threatening to a blow up the Australian High Commission in city’s Gulshan area.

The arrestee is identified as Tawsif Hossain Simanto, 28, resided from Tangail. He is a freelance photographer.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (Media unit) Masudur Rahman said Simanto on Tuesday (April 25) sent an email to the high commission office demanding Tk 500,000 as extortion money and threatened to blow up the embassy if they refuse to pay. 

A CTTC team conducted a drive at city’s Banasree area on Thursday evening and arrested Simanto from his home. A laptop, router and mobile phone have been seized from this possession, he added.

Simanto also sent the same threat mail to Jago Foundation later. There has been other allegation of fraud against Simanto.
