DHAKA: Viorica Dancila has been named as Romania's first female PM following the sudden resignation of Mihai Tudose, reports BBC.

Dancila, 54, a member of the European Parliament, is regarded as an ally of the governing Social Democratic Party (PSD) leader Liviu Dragnea.

President Klaus Iohannis says he wants her appointment approved quickly by parliament and a new government in place by 1 February.

In a surprise move, Romania’s largest political party nominated her from the country’s Tatar minority for prime minister on Wednesday (January 17). If she wins approval from the president and Parliament, she will be both the first Muslim and the first woman to hold the post.

Dancila has served in the European Parliament since 2009.
