“Sufia Kamal Hall incident an institutional violence against women” The human chain at Aparajeyo Bangla of DU campus

DHAKA UNIVERSITY: The incident of Dhaka University (DU) Poet Sufia Kamal Hall from where a few quota reformist female students were allegedly driven out at night, is an example of institutional oppression on women, said noted writer-columnist Syed Abul Maksud.

Maksud made the remark while addressing a human chain arranged with the demands of protecting the security and dignity of the female students, at Aparajeyo Bangla of the campus.

A faction of DU teachers formed the human chain Sunday noon (April 22).

“The Vice Chancellor said that they handed over the students to their guardians. It seemed to me very painful. For the first time, any woman is harassed institutionally. And that happened at the area of Dhaka University—Bangladesh’s great piece of land,” he said.

“Therefore, it is very shameful for all of us. I will only urge it to be the last incident of institutional oppression,” he added.

Prof Nasreen Wadud, Prof Asif Nazrul, Prof Sangeeta Ahmed, Prof Tasneem Siddiqui and former chairman of political science department Nurul Amin Bepari participated in the human chain presided over by Prof MM Akash.
