Kohli overtakes Rohit Sharma for most T20I runs

DHAKA: Virat Kohli has overtaken teammate Rohit Sharma in the list of highest run-getters in T20I history.

Kohli is now the highest run scorer in the format’s history after notching up his 22nd T20I half-century on Wednesday night as he led India to a comfortable victory against South Africa in Mohali, reports cricketcountry.com

Kohli finished the contest unbeaten on 72 that has taken his run-tally to 2441 runs from 66 innings which is seven more than Rohit who was out after scoring 12 while opening India’s chase, falling to Andile Phehlukwayo.

Kohli, 30, belted four fours and a six leading India’s victory march as they started their home season on a winning note, beating South Africa by seven wickets.

While Kohli and Rohit are the top-two run-getters in T20I history, they are followed by New Zealand opener Guptill who has 2,283 runs in 104 innings. Veteran Pakistan allrounder Shoaib Malik is at fourth with 2,263 runs (104 innings) while the retired Brendon McCullum of New Zealand completes the top-five with 2140 runs in 79 innings.

Kohli accompanied Quinton de Kock to lead from the front as India overhauled South Africa‘s 150-run target to take a 1-0 lead in the 2nd T20I in Mohali. Both captains scored half-centuries for their respective sides but Kohli trumped his South African counterpart to fashion a comfortable seven-wicket win – India’s first over South Africa in a T20 international at home.
