Afghanistan invite Bangladesh to bat first

DHAKA: Spirited Afghanistan have won toss and opted to bowl against Bangladesh in the 31st match of the ICC World Cup 2019 at The Rose Bowl, Southampton on Monday (June 24).

The do-or-die World Cup encounter of tigers was scheduled to begin at 3:30pm (Bangladesh Time).

But, the toss has been delayed by 10 minutes due to rain.

For Bangladesh, Mohammad Saifuddin and Mosaddek Hossain in for Rubel Hossain and Sabbir Rahman

After being invited by Afghanistan to bat first, Mashrafe Mortaza says, “I don't mind batting first because this is a used wicket, same pitch from the India v Afghanistan match”.

Gulbadin Naib: “We want to bowl first. Conditions look good for bowling and we played a game here, so we know the pitch. In the second innings against India, it looked alright throughout and this looks similar.

“We want to restrict Bangladesh to a chaseable total. We had a good chance to beat India and we’re confident that we can do better today”, he added.

Bangladesh, captained by Mashrafe Mortaza, which is currently placed at sixth spot with five points, has batted pretty well so far in the tournament.

After hunting down a target of 322 against West Indies in just 41.3 overs, Bangladesh fought admirably in a 382-run chase against Australia, finishing with an impressive 333/8.

England’s defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka on Friday breathed air into Bangladesh’s hopes of securing a semifinal berth and the ‘Tigers’ will be keen on making the most of the situation starting with a win over the bottom-placed Afghanistan.
