English lions clinically dispatched Caribbean devils

England Vs West Indies Played at Southampton, England on 14 June 2019

Brief Score Card:

England 213/2 in 33.1 Overs ( Joe Root 100* , Jonny Bairstow 45, C Woakes 40, Shanon Gabriel 2/ 49) beat West Indies 212 all out in 44.4 Overs  ( N Puran 63, SD Hetmeyer 39, CH Gayle 36, MA Wood 3/18 ,JC Archer 3/30 , J Root 2/ 27) by 8 wickets

All guns blazing tournament favorites England crushed flamboyant West Indies winning by 8 wickets in what turned out an absolutely one sided affair. Put into bat on a lively wicket under cloud cover high quality English pacers clipped wings of power striking Caribbean stoke makers.

West Indian blasters failed taking off at the start, Gayle tornado was contained before it gathered momentum. English bowlers hunted as a team as West Indies was crushed to 212 All out.  Though injury to couple of English batsmen( J Roy and Eoin Morgan ) created some worries yet brilliant batting of Joe Root (100*) , JonyBairstow ( 45 ) and C Woakes ( 40) clinically dispatched  awful looking West Indies . England overhauled well below par West Indies set target (213/2) in 33.1 Overs.

After 4 matches pre tournament favorites New Zealand, England, India and Australia look cruising to a zone of comfort grouping in top four.  Off course some teams are breathing on their shoulders. Every match from now on would be extremely important. Hope the sun that has started shining would never again hide behind the cloud and no more rain ruined matches would be experienced.

After a week of rain playing hell with world cup yesterday’s was pleasant return to business. A mouth watering contest was expected from two teams having express fast bowlers and power hitters.  But very skillful English pace attack led by West Indian born Jofra Archer (3/30) and Mark Wood (3/18) did not let flamboyant West Indies batsmen taking any liberty.

Bouncing on a pacey wicket, swinging in the air under cloud cover and moving the ball off the seam English pacers made life very uncomfortable for the Caribbean batsmen. Free scoring Lewis was cleaned up before scoring. Universe Boss Gayle after an usual clam started galloping. Consistent Shai Hope ( ) could not do much damage Volcano seemed like erupting as Galyle switched gears. But fortunately for England Gayle failed to full toll of a rare fielding lapse by Wood.

Plunket with pitched on a difficult length for Gayle (36) his cross seam delivery. All Gayle could do offer a comfortable catch to Bairstow. Two youngsters Puran and Hetmeyer settled in and strated showing hope to West Indies for a fighting score with a 89 runs fourth wicket partnership.

Any score of 260-270 was appearing possible. But smart English bowling by Root, Wood and Archer crushed the back bone of West Indies batting. Root made double strikes with his knuckle balls removing Hope and Holder. Russell started blasting .But a wrist injury appeared to restrict his free flowing stroke making. West Indian Innings lost momentum. JofraArcher and Mark Wood bowling very fast and furious swept away Caribbean late orders to 212 all out about 50 runs too less to set up a contest. Puran scored (63), Hetmeyer (39) and Gayle (36). Russell in his brief stay of 16 balls struck 2 sixes and a four before holing out in the deep.

A target of 213 never posed any threat to strong English batting battery though Roy, Morgan and Buttler suffered injury during the course of West Indies Innings. Root opening with Bairstow took heavy toll of Caribbean attack. On a wicket where English pacers made hay West Indies could hardly make any impression. Very professional approach of Root (100*), Bairstow (45) and Woakes (40) made England cruise to a very comfortable win by 8 wickets.

Roy, In his characterstic classical mode Root played with complete ease in scoring unbeaten 100. Bairstow was looking good at the start .Woakes getting an opportunity to bat in the top order also made hay while the sun shined. Morgan and Buttler were not risked. England with three wins from 4 matches now almost assured its place to top four. However English fate would largely depend on how soon the top English batsmen recover. New Zealand, England, India and Australia have their noses in front now. It will be very difficult for Sri Lanka, West Indies, Bangladesh and Pakistan to alter the situation from where it stands now.

JJ Root was adjudicated Player of the Match.
